March 11th, 1919 in memory of Richard Blundell Comins who was honoured in the epithet "cominsii".

Hoya cominsii was published in Annals of Botany (Oxford) Volume 5(4) page 505 -New Solomon Islands Plants- by William Botting Hemsley since 1891.

This specific name was cited as a syonymous name of H. nicholsoniae F.Muell. referred to Flore de la Nouvelle-Cale'donie et De'pendances 27: 1-335 (2020) by Liede-Schumann, S. et al (Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris.
